Концепция, разработанная лауреатом Нобелевской премии Ф.Модильяни, содержание которой сводится к тому, что потребление семьи зависит не столько от текущего дохода, сколько от суммарных доходов за период, равный длине жизненного цикла этой семьи. Это объясняет ряд отклонений эмпирических данных от общих закономерностей, вскрытых анализом спроса и потребления (например, надеясь на будущий рост доходов семья может себе позволить более высокий уровень жизни, беря деньги в долг, а молодежь расходует больше денег, чем сумма стипендии или зарплаты, поскольку пользуется помощью родителей).
